I took the time to talk with one of our elected Port Commissioners Brian Reaves today. He pointed out a number of ways the Ocean Highway and Port Authority could be used locally to not only create jobs, but to bring business to the county and island. Three
things port authority offers we really should consider and use more creatively. First bonding capability in the 50 million dollar range. Second, the port is also able to partner with businesses to add tax incentives, financing or grant money. Brian says OHPA has the ability to apply for grant money, in the range of 11 million, not available to local government and benefitting the community and partnerships with the port in ways not considered by other private industry.
- OHPA was active in funding of the first Habitat for Humanity home on the island
- They operated, at one time the toll bridge on the south end of the island as a road improvement project.
- Nassau Tradeplex was purchased with assistance from the OHPA and through grant money, is bringing businesses like Blue Links, Science First, Coastal Plastics, Victaulic, Florida Machine Works, Nassau Holding Company, Nassau Land Holdings, JS Trevett Properties, Yulee Tradeplex Development andScott Trucking
- When Shoney’s originally came to town, the OHPA “floated” the bonds to bring the business to town.
- Finally, the Port of Fernandina, one of the OHPA’s projects, brings about $25 million in local impact dollars and nearly 100 permanent employees, the majority local residents.
Unique use of this agency has been overlooked by other local government entities. I’m hoping some of the changes coming locally will mean smart use of an asset with interests almost perfectly aligned with the City of Fernandina Beach. There really is no excuse! I’m saying this, not Brian…btw…. If you want to learn more, Brian is always available at brianareaves@gmail.com .
